In wake of recent riots, the Minneapolis City Council has voted to disband the police department. After 55 million dollars of damage wreaked the city- it is unclear how law and order will be maintained going forward. Since this radical announcement, most leading Democrats have remained silent apart from Congresswoman Ilhan Omar. Minnesotans are waiting to hear how this decision will be handled.
Council president Lisa Bender states, “We are here because here in Minneapolis and in cities across the United States it is clear that our existing system of policing and public safety is not keeping our communities safe. Our efforts at incremental reform have failed. Period”. What Bender and the city council fail to recognize- are the countless lives protected and saved by our police. The disbanding comes after officer Derek Chauvin appeared to have killed George Floyd with an excess of force. However from medical analysis- it is shown that Mr. Floyd passed from cardiac arrest linked to the use of fentanyl and methamphetamines.
Without being proven guilty- the city’s entire police force must be disbanded on behalf of one officer. The city which is already in crisis- cannot continue to operate without law enforcement. As these radical changes go down, Minnesota’s representatives have remained overwhelmingly quiet. The people of Minnesota need to know where their representatives stand, and know what to expect with such radical changes.
One vocal supporter has been far left Congresswoman, Ilhan Omar. Omar has worked to rally support to collapse the police. With the loss of George Floyd, Omar has argued that the police department is beyond reformation. Under democratic leadership, we have seen the livelihood of citizens deprived in state lockdown. The Twin Cities burn. And law enforcement dismantled. These absurd events must be brought to an end with new competent leadership.
